How to make a felt ball rug

All about Felt ball Rugs: Felt ball rugs, also called mats/carpets are the special type of rugs in which Felt balls of the same (or different) sizes are stitched together to prepare a seating material. Nowadays, this item is modified to form couches, bean bags, and other custom materials. For felt ball rugs preparation, the essential items are Felt balls of required sizes and colors (ranging from 5 mm to 50 mm), strong thread, and Needle (easy stuff, isn’t it?).

What is Felt? Well again, since the mandatory item is felt (wool felt) it is quite necessary to have some information about felt. Felt is a non-woven cloth that is produced by matting, condensing, and pressing woolen fibers. While some types of felt are very soft, some are tough enough to form construction materials. Felt can be of any color, and made into any shape or size.

Making of Felt balls: Preparation/making of felt balls is quite an interesting task which is made using dry felt, soap, and water and processed through the simple technique of hand roll pressing. First of all, we take the estimated amount of dry wool-already dyed in hand. The estimation of wool is different according to the size of balls to be prepared. For example, the ball of size 20 mm requires nearly 2/3rd of the amount when compressed. The rolled and compressed wool is then dipped (soaked, the water stays easily) in a soap water solution. The water may be warm or cold (best in warm water). Then the wool is rolled in palms with slight pressing in the circular motion of the hand, balancing the roundness (that’s just technique to keep roundness balanced and wool fibers to catch each other firmly). Finally, the roll becomes too stiffens and starts to come in its size. The time of preparation of the felt ball depends upon the hand & experience (from 1 to 10 minutes). Finally, the wool roll turns into the perfect round balls. After the felt balls come into their actual shape and hardness, they should be dried in a hydro machine through continuous washing in hot water. Drying them in sun for appropriate (sufficient but not extreme) time adds shine to them. Finally, the wonderful felt balls are ready now.
